A Great Crop of New Artists at Art From the Barn!

Posted by Jen Frank on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 in Uncategorized

This year Art From the Barn is thrilled to welcome back some old friends from the original event, held in October of 2009.  Returning artists include Karen Heilsberg, whose “Gas Can Jack-o-lanterns” were a huge hit at the first AFTB, Jenni Hopfinger with her beautiful hand-painted glassware, and Elaine Coll with her unique and graceful monotypes from natural materials. Click on the Artists Gallery on the right of the Art From the Barn Homepage to learn more about returning Art From the Barn Artists.

In addition to these old friends, Art From the Barn is excited to welcome several new faces at this years event.  Among these new Art From the Barn Artists is Diane Peterson, fiber artist and maker of hand knit and felted fashion accessories.

Diane Peterson makes her first appearance at Art From the Barn

Diane grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Both she and her husband taught in the Metro Detroit area for over 30 years.

Here is Diane’s story in her own words:

“I began doing hand crafts as a youngster and the interest continued throughout my adult life.  At one time in my teaching career, I even taught 7th grade boys to knit.

Knitting became a retirement “therapy” for me and when “wool felting” piqued my interest, an idea planted by my older sister (you should really sell your things) grew into our doing shows together.

I only do a few shows a year.  One is in the Upper Peninsula as we spend the summer at our “camp” there.  Most of them are in Wisconsin because my sister (The Marketing Department) lives in Neshkoro and Milwaukee.

My youngest sister came up with name for our small business.  Our only daughter’s name is Annaliese (Anna, for short).  Hence, “annaThings.”

Up from the Ashes – Art from the Barn Returns!

Posted by Jen Frank on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 in Uncategorized

In October of 2009 the Foote and Frank families decided to hold an art show and sale in their recently renovated 100 year old barn.  The show, dubbed “Art From the Barn”, was a great success.  The several hundred visitors to the barn enjoyed the rural surroundings, the beautiful architecture of the old barn, and the wonderful art work displayed by nearly 30 local artists and crafters..

On the heels of this triumph, though, came a terrible set back. On Christmas Eve, 2009, the venerable old structure burned down,  leaving nothing but charred remains silhouetted against the grey December sky.  This was a heavy and discouraging loss to be sure, but there were some bright spots amid the gloom – no one  (neither people nor animals) was harmed in the fire, and the building was well enough insured to build something new on the site of the old structure.  A group of Amish contractors, led by Lynn Miller of Markesan, Wisconsin, came up with a plan and set to work.  By spring of 2010 a fine new barn stood in place of the old one.

Nothing could replace the old barn, but the new one proved to have its own charming characteristics, including a beautiful  loft with sky-lights all along the ridge line, and nice new pens for the goats!  Upon reflection, and with encouragement from friends and neighbors who had enjoyed the first Art From the Barn, the decision was made to do another show in the new building– Art From the Barn, 2011!

Art From the Barn 2011 will be held October first and second at 6320 County Rd K in Omro, Wisconsin.  The show will run from 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday, and 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday.  Both days will be filled with music, food, demonstrations, and a dazzling array of beautiful and affordable works of art.

Art From the Barn 2011 ~ Its a “Barn Again” Experience

Posted by Jen Frank on Sunday, January 23, 2011 in Uncategorized

We’re going back to the barn this October 2011, with a brand new Art From the Barn!

Our New Barn

Our New Barn

The Foote family lost our 100 year old barn, the site of the first Art From the Barn Art Show and Sale, in a terrible fire on Christmas Eve of 2009.  Down, but not out, we used the insurance money to rebuild, and are now the proud owners of a beautiful new Amish-built barn which rests on the same site as the old one.

Nothing could replace the old barn, but the new one has its own charming characteristics, including a beautiful  loft with sky-lights all along the ridgeline, and nice new pens for the goats!

Read on to find out more about this year’s Art From the Barn, and watch this space for updates about the artists and activities that will be included in the show!

Art From the Barn Cancelled for 2010!

Posted by Jen Frank on Thursday, September 30, 2010 in Uncategorized

If you are reading this, you are probably looking for information for Art From the Barn, 2010.

Unfortunately,  the beautiful old barn that housed the event burned on Christmas Eve of 2009, and the show has been cancelled for 2010.  This website is supposed to be redirected to a page that explains these circumstances, but it has come to my attention that, due to vagaries of internet that seem beyond our control, people are getting to the old version of the website through the blog.

We are sincerely sorry for any inconvenience or confusion that this may have caused the reader.  We are very grateful for your interest in Art From the Barn!  Please feel free to contact me a jen@artfromthebarn.com or at 920 685 2094 with any questions.

On a happier note, we have built a new barn (constructed by the Amish) and at this point we are thinking that Art From the Barn may yet rise from the Ashes in 2011!

We will do the very best we can to make sure accurate information about this new show is available as soon as possible.

In the meantime,  you might consider getting your art and fine crafts fix by visiting The Gathering Space Christmas Market, which is being put on by the Art From the Barn folks and will have some of the same artists as would have participated in the second Art From the Barn.

Visit www.rushfordgatheringspace.com and click on Christmas Market to learn more!

Art From the Barn exhibitor Emily Luebke publishes Humanity, Stories about Zombies

Posted by Jen Frank on Friday, November 6, 2009 in Uncategorized

Emily Luebke, longtime Omro resident, has wanted to be a writer since she first became aware that the written word existed. Her parents still have many of her early books, full of shaky penmanship and dubious spelling, illustrated with pencil drawings and held together with staples.

Emily was 5 or 6 years old when she authored those first books. She is 23 now, but the desire to share her stories with the world has not diminished. A prolific writer and storyteller, she has written 3 full length books (which are waiting to be published) and innumerable short stories and novellas. Fantasy for young adults is her favorite genre, and most of her writing is horror/suspense and fantasy intended for that age group. Until now these books have mostly been read by close family and a few friends, but now Emily has decided to venture into the world of published literature with her first “real” book – “Humanity, Stories about Zombies”.

This book, as one might infer from the title, has zombies in it, but “the stories are really about people and the different ways they react when faced with dire situations. The characters could just as easily be handling a flood, or massive fire, but zombies are so much more interesting,” Emily explains. Five short stories, each focusing on a different character, explore both the unexpected heroism and the hidden flaws that emerge when regular people are thrust into extraordinary situations.

“Humanity, Stories about Zombies” is Emily’s first attempt to connect with readers outside her immediate circle, and she hopes that she will receive feedback and constructive criticism from the people that purchase her book. She has taken a few writing classes at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, and plans to take more. She believes that a writer can also learn much from the act of writing and from being open to hearing what her readers think about her work.

“Humanity, Stories about Zombies” would make an excellent Halloween gift and would also be a very cool stocking stuffer for anyone on your list who has enjoys horror and suspense, or who is interested in supporting a local, emerging artist A book signing at the Omro Public Library is planned for November (watch the Omro Herald or contact the author for exact day and time).

You may purchase “Humanity, Stories about Zombies” by emailing frank6kids@yahoo.com or by calling 920 685 2094. Copies are also available at Rebel Alliance Theatre during the run of their current show, Frankenstein, as well as at future shows. For more information about Frankenstein performances, and about Rebel Alliance Theatre, visit www.rebelalliancetheatre.org. Art From the Barn meets Art Off Main

Posted by Jen Frank on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 in Uncategorized

Art Off Main meets Art From the Barn
At the August 1st Gallery Walk

Art From the Barn is an entirely unique art show and sale planned for October 2009. The setting will be a century old Wisconsin Barn located near Omro,. the show a carefully selected blend of fine arts, fine crafts, photography, and other one-of-a-kind gift items produced by local artisans.

The Art off Main Gallery is housed in The ARC – Winnebago County Disability Association’s Ability Resource Center. The building is a beautiful former printing company located at 115 Washington Avenue: the gallery features the work of professional and outsider artists.

The two will meet at the next Gallery Walk, to be held August 1st. ARC program director Ashley Hess has graciously consented to allow the Art From the Barn Artists to display some of their work in the Art Off Main Gallery. This will allow Gallery Walk patrons to be introduced to some of the wonderful Art From the Barn artists, and to get a little taste of what is in store at the Art From the Barn show coming up in October.

Artists featured at the Gallery Walk Art From the Barn preview will include Jon Foote. Jon is a 47 year old autistic man who, though completely non-verbal, finds a means of self-expression through his artwork. The creation of beautiful and richly textured crayon drawings is one of the ways in which Jon expresses himself and connects with the outside world. His pictures feature strong colors, which he applies in many layers using pastel crayon. His representational work gives the viewer a window on how Jon views the world – the objects that he draws are “disassembled” and the parts put back together on the paper in unusual configurations in a style that resembles cubism. His abstract pictures are thick with many colors of pastel crayon, as Jon find the process of applying the colors calming and comforting.
Other featured artists will include Jennifer Frank (Jon’s sister and coordinator of the Art From the Barn show). Jennifer does hand carved folk art santas and other whimsical folk art creations. Elaine Coll makes beautiful monotypes using plant material gathered from her garden and the roadside. Karen Hielsberg, who will represent Art From the Barn as hostess at the Gallery Walk show, makes wonderful creations from gourds, as well as tinware and hand painted signs. Rita HermansonMueller will also be on hand with hand-crafted pottery. Sheila Duffy specializes in hand ceramic vases and embellished gourds, vessels, and much more, and Jenny Van Lieshout of Art Creations does abstract oil painting on homemade stretched canvas.
These artists and more will be featured at the Art Off Main Gallery August Gallery Walk. Gallery Walk runs from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on the first Saturday of every month. This August 1st join the Art From the Barn artists and get a taste of the big Art From the Barn show coming this October 10 and 11 to the Foote Family Barn, located at 6320 County Rd K, in Omro, Wisconsin.
For more information about Art Off Main, visit the ARC website at www.arcwinnebago.com. For more information about the Art From the Barn show, visit www.artfromthebarn.com.
